AJAX is disappointing Power-Users looking for Web 2.0-Style Business Apps

A great user experience is one of the most compelling and best selling characteristic of a modern business application. Thus, application vendors are under permanent pressure considering new user interface technologies and introducing Rich Internet Applications (RIA) instead of traditional windows clients. This report introduces the concept of personas to characterize the user expectation and applies it to the widely used AJAX technology. In contrast to Occasional users, most Power-Users are disappointed by AJAX based RIAs and technical limitations are hard to overcome. Adobe’s and Microsoft’s new client technologies are recently released for production and should be evaluated by application vendors now.

CIOs müssen ein realistisches Migrationsszenario entwickeln, das alle Aspekte von der Technologie bis zur Rentabilität umfasst. Manche Vorgehensweise hat sich bei der SOA-Einführung (serviceorientierte Architektur) als erfolgreich erwiesen. Dazu sollten IT-Verantwortliche die SOA als ein Architekturprinzip verstehen: Eine SOA gibt es nicht zu kaufen wie etwa ein Office-Paket. Die Idee der Serviceorientierung besteht darin, vorhandene Anwendungen und Systeme weiterhin zu nutzen.

Where to start with my SOA implementation?

SOA is not hype any more. There are too many successful implementations and software vendors claiming large reference deployments. However, you cannot simply buy SOA. You have to scout your personal path into a service oriented IT and process landscape on your own, based on the existing landscape and business requirements. This article describes briefly some best practices, CIOs and chief architects reporting from their approach to SOA and the selection of infrastructure products.
